Part I — The Living Room Performance By the time Rebecca pushed through the kitchen carrying another tray of Costco brownies, her father was already dancing in the middle of the living room like he’d forgotten other people existed. The room froze around him in stages. First the children noticed. Then the neighbors. Then the…
Part I — The Red Reflection Christine saw the word before she saw the woman holding it. At first it looked like a strange red glow moving across the polished dance floor during her first dance with Paul. Then she realized the glow was reflecting off the screen of an iPad. DECLINED. The word flashed…
Part I — The Driveway at Dusk Emma was halfway down the driveway before her mother finally said her name. Not loudly. Not angrily. Just once. “Emma.” The porch light behind Linda turned her into a soft yellow shape against the darkening street. The screen door hung open beside her. Kathleen stood behind it in…
Part I — The Suitcase That Opened Everything The suitcase hit the floor hard enough to pop open. Clothes exploded across the airport tile. Swimsuits. Sandals. A bottle of sunscreen rolling in circles. A stuffed rabbit slid beneath the check-in counter like it was trying to escape the family that owned it. “Mom,” Kathleen whispered,…
Part I — The Bouquet Nobody Wanted Rachel saw the bouquet coming straight at her face. Not floating. Not drifting. Flying. Part I — The Dance Everyone Pretended Was Fine Laura realized something was wrong when Patrick tightened his hand at her waist instead of letting her step away. The patio lights glowed softly above the vineyard. Someone laughed near the bar. Glasses clinked. A slow song drifted through the warm Napa evening while guests watched…
Part I — The Silver Blouse By the time Emma stepped into the middle of the living room, people were already looking at her. Not because she wanted attention. At least that was what she would tell herself later. The music was loud enough to rattle the glass ornaments hanging from Brenda’s giant Christmas tree….
Part I — The Glass Door Christine read the text three times before she answered it. Still at work. Don’t wait up. Richard always texted like a man speaking calmly into a room he had already left. No emojis. No details. No apology. Just enough warmth to sound reasonable. She stared at the message while…
Part I — The Cap She Fixed With Safety Pins Nicole almost started crying before the ceremony even began. Not because she was graduating. Because her mother was already waving both arms from the bleachers like Nicole had just won the lottery instead of an associate’s degree from a community college gym packed with folding…
