He Built a Fence to Protect His Yard, but the Survey Exposed What His Neighbor Had Been Hiding for Years

Chapter 1: The Tire Tracks That Finally Crossed the Line

The tire tracks cut straight through the corner where Benjamin Carter had hammered four wooden stakes into the ground the night before.

He stood at the edge of the driveway with one hand around a cooling mug of coffee, staring at two muddy grooves that crossed his side yard, flattened the new grass, and clipped one of the strings marking his future garden beds. The string had snapped. One end lay half-buried in a rut filled with brown water.

For several seconds, Benjamin did nothing.

That worried him more than anger would have.

He had spent most of the winter sketching the garden on graph paper while sitting through remote meetings at his kitchen table. Three raised beds. A narrow gravel path. Tomatoes against the back fence where the afternoon sun stayed longest.

Now a truck tire had gone directly through the place where the first bed was supposed to sit.

The sound of a metal garage door rattling open came from next door.

Benjamin looked up.
