My Neighbor Said the HOA Gave Him the Right to Use My Electricity—Then I Found the Original Agreement

Chapter 1: The Orange Cord That Should Not Have Been There

Michael Carter had one hand on the weatherproof cover of his outdoor outlet when he realized something was already plugged into it.

A thick orange extension cord disappeared beneath the narrow strip of shrubs between his house and the wooden fence.

He stared at it for several seconds.

The cord was not his.

Michael crouched and touched the plug, as though the plastic might somehow explain itself. It was seated firmly in the lower receptacle. The outlet cover had been bent upward to accommodate it.

From somewhere beyond the fence came the rising whine of a power tool.

Michael straightened.

The sound stopped.
