They Sprayed His Cedar Farm Fence Gray Without Asking—Then One Work Order Put Every Association Project on Hold

Chapter 1: The Morning Half His Fence Turned Gray

Scott Taylor saw the gray before he saw the man holding the spray gun.

He had just rounded the last bend in the shared gravel lane with a wagon stacked high with square bales when a flat, wet strip of color flashed between the cedar posts ahead. For one second he thought someone had hung plastic along the fence.

Then the mist moved.

A worker in a respirator stood beside Scott’s pasture gate, sweeping a spray wand across the cedar boards in long, even passes.

Scott took his foot off the throttle.

The tractor rolled another few feet before the wagon behind him settled with a creak. Ahead, nearly half of the fence had changed from the warm honey-brown Scott had maintained for years to a dull, opaque gray.

The worker kept spraying.

Scott set the brake and climbed down.
