They Chained the Farm Road He Had Used for Thirty Years—Then the Old Survey Line Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The New Chain Across an Old Farm Road

Charles Green saw the chain too late to stop without touching the brakes hard.

The hay truck lurched forward, the stacked square bales settling against their straps with a dry scrape. His metal coffee thermos rolled across the passenger-side floorboard and struck the door.

Twenty feet ahead, a new galvanized chain stretched across the gravel lane between two fresh wooden posts.

Charles sat behind the wheel with both hands resting on it.

He had driven this road since he was old enough to reach the pedals of his father’s pickup. It ran between a soybean field and a low pasture, crossed a shallow drainage cut, then split near the cedar fence. One branch continued toward neighboring acreage. The other dropped toward Charles’s lower hayfield.

There had never been a chain.

Catherine Taylor stood beside it.

She wore work boots and a light jacket, and she held a clipboard against one hip. Two road-association members waited several yards behind her near a pickup. None of them looked surprised to see him.
