The HOA Ordered Him to Stop Helping His Elderly Neighbors—Then the Yard Revealed What Everyone Had Ignored

Chapter 1: The Mower Stopped Halfway Through the Weeds

Katherine Young stepped directly in front of the mower.

Brian Harris killed the engine before the front wheels reached her shoes.

For a few seconds, the only sound was the ticking of hot metal and the dry hiss of grass clippings settling onto the concrete. Behind Katherine, half of the Davis sidewalk was visible for the first time in months. The other half disappeared beneath weeds that leaned across the pavement in tangled brown-green clumps.

“You need to stop,” Katherine said.

Brian kept both hands on the mower handle.

“I’m almost through this section.”

“I said stop.”

Across the yard, Margaret Davis stood on her porch with one hand wrapped around the railing. Gregory sat in a patio chair beside the front door, watching without moving.
