The Numbered Hooks

Part I — The Card on the Table

Michael slid the dark debit card across the kitchen table like it might burn his fingers.

Emily did not pick it up.

For three seconds, she only looked at the chip, the raised silver numbers, the familiar bank logo, and the name embossed beneath it.

Daniel Whitmore.

Her ex-fiancé’s name sat in her mother’s kitchen as if it had never left.

Michael leaned forward, his work jacket still smelling faintly of rain and motor oil. “Tell me you know why Mom has this.”

Emily’s white blouse pulled tight at her shoulders when she inhaled. She had worn it that morning to a job interview where a woman younger than her had smiled too carefully and said, We’ll be in touch. The blouse was still buttoned to the throat, as if dignity could be fastened shut.

“Where did you find it?” she asked.
