The payment failed at 8:17 on Monday morning.

Maria Carter was standing at her grandfather’s kitchen counter with one hand around a cup of coffee she had forgotten to drink when the bank alert appeared on her phone.

TRANSFER UNAVAILABLE.

She read it twice.

Then the hospice nurse called.

“Maria, I wanted to speak with you before I came by this afternoon.”
