The HOA Ordered Daniel to Tear Down His Wall, Then the Clubhouse Began to Split Apart

Chapter 1: The Plaque Appeared Between the Falling Blocks

The third concrete block struck the ground hard enough to shake dust from Daniel Moore’s porch railing.

When the pale gray cloud cleared, a rectangle of brass showed between the exposed courses of the retaining wall. The demolition worker stopped with the hydraulic hammer raised above his shoulder.

DANIEL MOORE, P.E.

The rest of the engraved line remained buried behind the next block, but Daniel knew what it said: SLOPE RETENTION AND DRAINAGE CONTROL.

Nicholas Carter looked at the plaque, then at Daniel.

“So you signed your landscaping,” he said.

Two neighbors standing near the property line laughed uncertainly. Neither looked at Daniel afterward.

Daniel lifted his phone and took a photograph. The screen caught the broken wall, the brass plaque, Nicholas’s polished shoes, and the yellow violation sheet folded beneath his arm.
