The Neighbor Ordered His Father’s Shed Demolished, Then Learned Who Controlled the Only Road Home

Chapter 1: The Excavator Arrived Before the Funeral Flowers Faded

Benjamin Davis hit the gravel hard enough to skin both palms.

For a second he stayed there, one knee twisted beneath him, staring at the white funeral wreath leaning against the farmhouse porch. Eleven days earlier, the same wreath had stood beside his father’s casket. Now several lilies had browned at the edges, and one loose ribbon dragged in the dust beside Benjamin’s hand.

George Wilson stood over him in a spotless white polo.

“I told you not to step in front of me,” George said.

Benjamin pushed himself upright. “You walked onto my property.”

“I came to give you one last opportunity.”

George pointed past him toward the cedar shed beside the drive. The building leaned slightly toward the ditch, its boards silvered by rain and sun. One corner of the roof had sunk. The door hung crooked, resting most of its weight on the lower hinge.

“Have that removed by Friday,” George said. “Or the association will remove it for you.”
