The man stepped directly across the strip of fresh seed while Robert Hall was still holding the hose.

Robert watched one white sneaker sink into the dark soil, then the other. The man never looked toward the house. He crossed diagonally from the sidewalk beside Robert’s driveway to the corner near the community mailbox, shaving maybe forty seconds off the proper route.

The hose went slack in Robert’s hand.

“Excuse me.”

The man glanced over.

“I just reseeded that.”

“Sorry.”

He kept walking.
