The HOA Cut Down His Sons’ Basketball Hoop, Then Learned Who Controlled the Summer Water

Chapter 1: The Saw Started Before Daniel Finished Reading the Notice

The saw was already halfway through the steel pole when Daniel turned into his driveway.

For one disorienting second, he thought Tyler had tried to move the hoop himself. Then he saw the contractor’s orange extension cord snaking across the grass, the spray of silver filings at the base, and Robert White standing beside the mailbox with one hand raised as if directing traffic.

Daniel braked hard enough to throw a socket wrench off the passenger seat.

Tyler was near the garage, barefoot, holding the folded notice Daniel had found taped to the front door the previous evening. His younger brother stood behind him. Neither boy spoke.

The saw screamed again.

Daniel got out of the truck and shut the door carefully.

“Stop cutting.”

The contractor eased off the trigger but kept both hands on the saw. He looked toward Robert instead of Daniel.
