The HOA Called Her Family Cemetery an Obstruction, Until She Refused to Move

Chapter 1: The Excavator Stopped Beneath Her Family Quilt

The sound was not loud.

A hard metallic scrape. A brittle snap. Then the small, unmistakable clatter of stone falling onto gravel.

Katherine Mitchell dropped the fabric she had been measuring and ran through the back door of the quilt shop.

A yellow excavator was nosing through the old iron cemetery gate.

Its bucket had caught the corner of a low marble marker and shaved away a pale wedge. The broken piece lay beside a tire track, clean and white against the red Virginia dirt.

Katherine knew the marker before she could read it. Her grandmother’s younger brother had died at seven. His stone was hardly taller than a bread box.

“Stop the machine.”

The operator looked down through the glass cab. He wore a sun-faded cap and held one hand on the controls.
