The Pen on Her Side

Part I — The Line That Would Not Move

“Captain, you will certify the package now.”

General Robert Brady’s finger came down toward Jennifer Walker like it could pin her to the chair.

The room went still.

Not quiet. Never quiet. The command floor beneath Washington had too many machines for that—too many screens whispering, phones pulsing, clocks measuring what no one wanted measured. But the people stopped moving. Officers froze with cups halfway to their mouths. Analysts stared into glowing maps and pretended not to listen.

Across the metallic table, Jennifer kept her hands folded.

Beside them lay a black pen.

She had not touched it.

On the wall display behind Brady, the countdown kept falling.
