The Will Left Him Nothing, Then Police Came To The Lake House Door

Chapter 1: The Police Lights Reached The Lake House Before Sunset

The first black vehicle came down the pine road with no siren, only lights, red and blue breaking across the wet trunks like something had already gone wrong.

Nicholas Thompson saw it from the kitchen window while the kettle hissed on the stove behind him. For one second, his mind made the old mistake. He thought of his mother’s oxygen machine. He thought of the night Barbara had stopped breathing right and he had run barefoot over the cold slate floor to unlock the front door for paramedics.

Then a second vehicle rolled into view behind the first.

Then a third.

He turned the burner off with the edge of his knuckle and stood still as the convoy curved past the lower dock road and climbed toward the stone-and-glass entrance of the lake house.

No ambulance.

No neighbor waving from the passenger seat.

Just sheriff’s vehicles and a dark sedan he recognized before the door opened.
