My Neighbor Laughed at My Blocked Mailbox Until His Own Guests Had to Walk Through the Rain

Chapter 1: The Orange Notices in George Walker’s Hand

“You’re doing this on purpose.”

Rain ran from the brim of Jason Moore’s jacket and gathered along his jaw. He stood in the street between George Walker’s mailbox and the old blue pickup, close enough that George could smell coffee on his breath.

George held six orange postal notices against the truck’s wet hood. Their corners had softened in the rain.

Jason pointed past him toward a line of cars parked farther down the block. “My family is walking half a mile because of this thing. You know exactly what you’re doing.”

George looked at the phrase printed across the HOA complaint Jason had brought with him.

Unreasonable inconvenience.

He lifted the notices.

“That,” George said, “is what these have been saying for six weeks.”
