The HOA Cut Down Robert’s Seventy-Five-Year-Old Oak, Then Charged Him for the Damage

Chapter 1: The Crane Arrived Before Robert Could Reach the Lawn

The crane had already lifted one of the oak’s largest limbs above Robert Anderson’s roof when he ran onto the lawn barefoot.

For one disoriented second, he thought the grinding sound had come from a garbage truck. Then the chainsaw bit deeper, and the limb hanging from the crane shuddered as if it were still trying to pull itself back toward the trunk.

“Stop!” Robert shouted.

The tree-crew foreman looked down from beside the bucket truck. His orange vest glowed under the work lights. “Sir, stay clear of the drop zone.”

“That’s my tree.”

The foreman glanced toward the street, not at the oak. “We have an authorized work order.”

“Then show it to me.”

Another saw started above them.
