He Turned the Paw Prints Green, Then the HOA Put His Name on the Violation Notice

Chapter 1: The Dog Returned Before the Sprinklers Stopped

The German shepherd squatted beside Mark Harris’s mailbox while the sprinklers were still turning.

Mark stood ten feet away with a brass hose nozzle in one hand and a pair of pruning shears in the other. The sprinkler head clicked left, hissed across the lawn, then clicked back. Water darkened the dog’s coat along one flank. The dog did not move.

Neither did Gregory Miller.

Gregory walked behind it with his head lowered toward his phone, one hand looped loosely through the leash. The blue light from the screen reflected against his face. He wore running shoes and a light jacket, though he was moving too slowly to be exercising.

“Gregory.”

Mark’s voice cut through the mechanical rhythm of the sprinkler.

Gregory looked up, then looked down at the dog as if noticing where it was for the first time.

Mark set the shears on the driveway. “That’s the fourth time this week.”
