The Fence He Moved Eleven Feet Cost More Than the Land He Tried to Take

Chapter 1: The Post Was Already in the Ground

The first blow landed before Scott Carter understood what he was hearing.

A hollow metal crack rolled across the backyard, followed by the grind of machinery and the dull thud of something heavy settling into earth.

He stepped out through the kitchen door with one hand still holding his coffee. Beyond the row of raised beds, a fence contractor stood beside a post driver. A cedar post had already been planted less than six feet from Scott’s pear tree.

Gregory Thompson leaned against the unfinished run of fence as though he were inspecting work on his own porch.

Scott stopped at the edge of the garden.

“Why is that post there?”

Gregory turned slowly. He wore a burgundy polo and clean tan work pants despite the churned soil around his shoes.

“Morning, Scott.”
