They Said the Mules Would Never Follow Her, Until the Dead Field Turned Dark Again

Chapter 1: The Mule Line Stopped at Emma’s Gate

Samuel Harris swung the lower-field gate shut while twenty mules stood nose to tail behind Emma Taylor.

The iron latch struck the post with a hard, final sound. Harness chains settled along the muddy road. One animal stamped, then another, until the line seemed to carry its own low thunder between the fences.

Emma stood on the field side of the gate with mud to the ankles of her boots. Across from her, Samuel kept one gloved hand on the top rail. His beard was damp with mist, and his pale work shirt showed dark beneath the arms from bringing the team down from his barn.

“You brought them this far,” Emma said.

“I brought them to look.”

Two hired farmhands waited near the rear wagon. Three neighboring landowners had followed on foot, pretending they had come only to inspect the road. Joshua Green stood beside the smallest pair, his eyes moving between Samuel and Emma as if the argument might choose him before he chose a side.

Emma looked past them toward the mules. Their breath rose white in the cold. She knew most of them by gait and temperament. The broad gray near the center dragged his left hind toe when tired. The sorrel mare disliked loose chain behind her. The small dark pair beside Joshua had once taken a plow through sleet without pulling crooked.

Samuel tightened his grip on the gate.
