Chapter 1: The Excavator Was Already Inside the Fence Line

The excavator bucket was already tearing through Charles Hill’s field when he came around the machine shed.

For half a second, he simply stopped.

Yellow steel dropped into the grassy edge below his hayfield, curled, and lifted a load of black earth. Roots hung from the bucket. Water seeped into the fresh cut.

Charles had owned that strip for thirty-one years.

His family had worked it longer.

“Shut it down!”

The operator looked over.

Charles raised both hands, palms forward.
