He Cut Down the Old Oaks for a Better View, Then the Boundary Stake Told a Different Story

Chapter 1: The Chainsaw Was Already in the Oak

Robert Carter heard the chainsaw before he saw the tree.

The sound came from below the pasture, beyond the equipment shed, where his land dropped through a stand of old oaks toward the lake.

Nobody had permission to cut there.

He left the gate half-latched and started downhill.

The chainsaw stopped.

Then it screamed again.

Robert broke through the brush and froze.

A mature oak leaned toward the lake, its trunk opened by a fresh wedge cut. Anthony Wilson stood beside it with the saw in his gloved hands.
