She Thought the County Could Seize His Farm Truck Until He Opened the Notebook He Had Kept for Three Years

Chapter 1: The Tow Cable Tightened Before Robert Said a Word

The steel cradle scraped under the rear axle of Robert Miller’s farm truck before he understood that Jack Harris intended to take it.

Robert stepped out from behind the feed trailer and stopped in the middle of the gravel road.

“Jack.”

Jack kept one knee on the ground. He pushed the cradle another few inches beneath the truck, then stood and brushed dust from his palms.

“Morning, Robert.”

“That truck isn’t going anywhere.”

Jack glanced toward Betty Clark instead of answering.

Betty stood twenty feet uphill beside her white pickup, one hand resting on the open door. Her clothes were too clean for the road, but Robert had seen her walk job sites in better shoes than most people wore to church. She had run the shared-road association for six years and spoke about the easement as though her family had poured it themselves.
