She Opened the Tanker Valve While the Whole County Waited for the Pond to Live Again

Chapter 1: The Tanker Waited Beside a Silent Pond

“The fish may never touch this water.”

Brandon Mitchell said it from ten feet away, but the words seemed to travel through the heavy black hose in Rebecca Taylor’s hands.

The hose lay across the gravel bank like something asleep, its open end angled over the pond. Behind Rebecca, the silver tanker’s aeration pumps hummed with a steady mechanical pulse. Every few seconds, water shifted inside the tank with a deep, crowded slosh.

Nearly four thousand finger-length bass and bluegill were sealed inside.

Rebecca kept both hands around the hose coupling. “My permit was cleared yesterday.”

“It was conditionally cleared.”

“You signed the field sheet.”

“I signed the current-water inspection.” Brandon held a yellow folder against his dark county jacket. “That is not the same as final authorization to stock.”
