When They Fenced Off Margaret’s Back Pasture, an Old Farm Lane Became the One Thing They Couldn’t Ignore

Chapter 1: The Fence Across the Only Working Lane

Gregory Carter’s sledgehammer came down before Margaret Hill had both feet out of her truck.

The old wooden post split near the base with a crack that carried across the hay field.

“Gregory.”

He raised the hammer again.

Margaret shut the truck door and walked toward him, boots grinding over the gravel lane her family had used longer than she had been alive.

The second blow knocked the post sideways.

The faded metal reflector her husband had screwed onto it years ago dropped into the weeds.

Gregory rested the hammer against his thigh.
