After My Daughter Crashed at the Irrigation Gate, I Followed the Farm Cooperative’s Missing Money

Chapter 1: The Fine Beside the Irrigation Gate

Ashley’s pink bicycle went sideways before Patrick Miller understood why.

One second she was pedaling toward the irrigation crossing, the streamers on her handlebars flicking in the warm air. The next, her front tire caught beneath a bright plastic-coated chain stretched across the concrete approach.

The bicycle twisted.

Ashley hit the concrete on her right side.

“Dad!”

Patrick dropped the fencing pliers in his hand and ran.

By the time he reached her, Ashley had rolled onto her back. Her face had gone pale beneath the dust. One knee was scraped, but Patrick barely noticed it.

She was holding her right wrist against her chest.
