The HOA Towed His Old Truck From His Own Driveway—Then He Checked Who Was Really Breaking the Rules

Chapter 1: The Tow Truck Was Already in His Driveway

Michael Walker knew something was wrong before he reached his house.

The yellow boom of a tow truck rose above the hedges at the end of his street, angled against the pale morning sky. At first he assumed somebody had broken down. Then he turned into his cul-de-sac and saw the rear tires of his red-and-white pickup hanging two feet above his own driveway.

He braked hard enough to send the folder on his passenger seat sliding to the floor.

The truck had belonged to his father before it belonged to him. The paint had faded along the hood, and the chrome on the rear bumper had lost its shine years ago, but the engine was sound. Michael had replaced the fuel pump himself the previous winter.

Now a tow operator was tightening a chain beneath it.

Michael stopped in the street.

Jeffrey Clark stood beside the mailbox with his arms folded.

That bothered Michael almost as much as the tow truck.
