My Neighbor Built His Shed Eight Feet Into My Yard—Then the HOA Discovered Who Approved It

Chapter 1: The Shed That Wasn’t There Six Weeks Ago

Linda King saw the roof before she saw the rest of it.

She had one hand wrapped around the handle of her suitcase and the other pushing open the wooden side gate when a dark green metal roof appeared above the hydrangeas at the back of her yard.

She stopped with the gate half open.

There had never been a roof there.

For six weeks she had been staying with her sister two states away, helping after a hip replacement and telling herself that her own house would manage perfectly well without her. She had arranged for the mail to be held, set the irrigation timer, asked a neighbor across the street to bring in anything left on the porch, and checked her security cameras every few days.

Nothing in those preparations included returning home to a building.

Linda left the suitcase beside the gate and walked across the lawn.

The structure was not small. It was a finished wooden storage shed, painted tan with white trim, tall enough for double doors and topped with the dark roof she had seen from the gate. Beneath it stretched a fresh rectangle of pale gravel. The grass that should have occupied that corner was gone.
