They Ordered Her Farm Gate Beacon Removed, Not Knowing Why Her Husband Built It

Chapter 1: The Notice Hanging Beside the Flashing Gate

Jessica Carter was fastening a yellow notice to Rachel Harris’s gate when the feed truck came around the bend.

Rachel saw the truck first as a white rectangle beyond Jessica’s shoulder, slowing on the narrow gravel lane. Then the amber beacon above the gate flashed twice, bright even in the morning sun.

Jessica looked up at it.

“There,” she said to one of the two board members standing beside her. “That’s exactly what we’re talking about.”

Rachel stopped ten feet inside the fence.

The feed truck rolled to a halt behind Jessica’s SUV. Its driver leaned forward over the steering wheel, waiting.

Rachel’s cattle shifted in the pasture beyond the gate, irritated by the diesel engine. She walked toward Jessica without hurrying.

“What are you putting on my fence?”
