Chapter 1: The Morning Stephanie’s Thermostat Stopped Rising

At 6:14 on Tuesday morning, Stephanie Miller pressed the thermostat’s up arrow for the third time and watched the number fall anyway.

Sixty-one.

Then sixty.

The forced-air register under the living-room window breathed nothing but cool air across the hardwood floor.

She stood barefoot in the blue light from the kitchen, one hand wrapped around a mug that had stopped steaming, and listened.

The building’s boiler was running.

She could hear it through the floor: a low mechanical thrum from the basement, followed by the faint knock of pipes warming somewhere beneath her unit.

Stephanie frowned.
