They Gave His Deeded Parking Space to a Neighbor Because He Rarely Used It

Chapter 1: The Truck Sitting Dead Center in Space Fourteen

The first thing Andrew Harris noticed was the truck.

Not the broken orange cone near the curb. Not the white plastic placard lying face-down under the rear bumper. The truck itself—a lifted black Ford F-250 sitting squarely between the faded lines of Space 14 as if it had been measured into place.

Andrew stopped halfway across the parking lot.

For fourteen years, he had parked there often enough to stop thinking about it. Space 14 sat beside the narrow strip of landscaping behind his building, close enough that he could carry groceries upstairs without crossing the main drive. When he worked from home for weeks at a time, the space sometimes remained empty. When he traveled for estimating jobs, it could sit unused even longer.

But it had never belonged to anyone else.

He walked closer.

The white placard had once been fixed to the short metal post at the head of the space. It read SPACE 14 in black block letters. Now one corner was scraped and gray from the pavement.

Andrew bent to pick it up.
