He Built His Machinery Shed Across Her Farm Line—Then the Roses Beside the Survey Pin Died

Chapter 1: The Concrete Reached the Roses Before Noon

By the time Kathleen Carter understood where the concrete was going, the gray slurry had already reached the first rose cane.

She set her coffee on the fence post so fast that some of it sloshed over the rim.

Across the narrow strip between the two farms, a concrete truck idled beside the skeleton of Benjamin Walker’s new machinery shed. Two men worked the wet mix toward a row of wooden forms. The unfinished building rose behind them in pale lumber and steel brackets, open to the morning light.

Kathleen stared at the forms.

Then at the roses.

Then at the rust-dark metal point barely visible between two clumps of grass.

“Hold it,” she called.

The men looked up, but neither stopped.
