They Ordered His Farm Truck Off the Shared Lane—Then He Read the Easement They Had Ignored for Years

Chapter 1: The Notice Under the Farm Truck Wiper

Samuel Walker saw the white rectangle beneath his windshield wiper before he saw the cattle nosing the fence.

He stopped halfway across the gravel turnout, one boot on the packed stone and the other still on the grass, and stared at it.

The truck had been sitting exactly where he had left it the night before: angled beside the weathered cattle gate, nose pointed toward the shared lane, livestock trailer hooked behind it. In forty minutes he was supposed to be on the county road headed toward a small farm twelve miles east, where a customer had six calves waiting to be hauled to the sale barn.

Samuel pulled the paper free.

NOTICE OF ACCESS VIOLATION.

Below that, in smaller type, it stated that overnight parking of commercial equipment within the maintained shared access corridor was prohibited effective immediately.

Samuel read the line twice.

Then he looked down at the gravel beneath his boots.
