They Tore Through His Farm Drainage Strip, Then Learned Five Extra Feet Changed Who Controlled the Land

Chapter 1: The Tracks Ran Past the Old Fence Line

The first track ended where Scott Thompson knew no track was supposed to be.

He stopped his pickup beside the lower hayfield and stared through the windshield at two bands of black soil cut through the spring grass. They came through the open service gate, followed the drainage channel for a short distance, then widened toward the west until one set of tracks crossed the line where his old woven-wire fence had stood that morning.

Three fence posts were down.

A fourth leaned toward the ditch with wire twisted around its base.

Scott shut off the engine.

An excavator sat fifty yards away with mud packed into its steel tracks. Beside it, the drainage contractor’s pickup was parked on flattened grass. The operator stood near the channel watching another worker clear branches from a culvert.

Scott got out without calling to them.

He walked first to the fence.
