They Opened Her Farm Turnouts to Weekend Traffic—Then the First Tow Exposed What the Road Committee Had Ignored

Chapter 1: The Signs Were Gone Before Saturday Noon

Catherine Nelson knew the turn was wrong before she saw the cars.

Her cattle trailer was already angling too wide across the gravel lane, the rear tires edging toward the ditch, when she lifted her eyes past the hood of the pickup and saw a white SUV sitting squarely in the western turnout.

A second vehicle occupied the eastern one.

Both places had been empty when she left before sunrise.

Catherine stopped.

Behind her, six bred heifers shifted inside the trailer. The movement rolled through the steel floor in a dull series of thumps. One animal bawled. The pickup idled beneath her hands.

She looked again, as if the vehicles might rearrange themselves if she gave them a second chance.

They did not.
