The Letter on the Table

Part I — The Man in the Doorway

The moment Kevin Walker appeared in the doorway of the private dining car, soaked from the storm and holding a red envelope like it weighed more than silver, Emily Whitaker forgot how to breathe.

Everyone else saw a steward who had lost his place.

Emily saw the man she had once promised to leave with.

Rain lashed the dark windows of the anniversary train. The glass trembled with each turn of the track, catching the glow of chandeliers and throwing it back over the long table: white linen, crystal stems, folded napkins, black tuxedos, pearl earrings, polished smiles.

It was a perfect room, which was how Emily knew it was dangerous.

Her father had chosen every detail. The private car. The guest list. The vintage champagne. The announcement that would “restore confidence” in the Whitaker name after months of rumors about debt, old contracts, and a railway accident nobody in her family ever discussed without lowering their voices.

Tonight was not only her engagement dinner.

It was a performance.
