She Carried the Harvest to the Fence, but the Land Was Never His to Take

Chapter 1: The Basket Frank Ordered Her to Empty

“Dump it.”

Frank Hall’s voice carried across the vegetable rows before the first drop of rain fell.

Kathleen stopped at the weathered fence with both hands locked around the wicker basket. Lettuce leaves pressed against her forearm. Carrot tops trembled in the wind, and three tomatoes rolled against one another near the rim.

Frank stood on the other side of the gate in a clean white shirt that made him look as though he had come to inspect the work rather than interrupt it. Mark Wilson and two seasonal farmhands waited several yards behind him. None of them looked directly at Kathleen.

“Dump what?” she asked.

“You heard me.” Frank pointed at the basket. “Put it on the ground and empty it.”

The sky beyond the cornfields had gone the color of old steel. Kathleen could smell rain and cut vines. She adjusted the basket against her hip.

“I harvested what was ready.”
