They Called His Pasture a Community Garden—Until the Old Fence Line Became Impossible to Ignore

Chapter 1: The Garden Beyond Samuel’s Old Fence

“You can’t just walk in here.”

Samuel Mitchell stopped with one boot on the packed path between two raised beds.

The woman holding the watering wand did not lower it. Water continued hissing over a row of tomato plants, darkening the mulch beneath them.

Samuel looked past her instead of answering.

Fourteen garden beds filled the corner where his cattle used to nose through waist-high grass. Cedar frames stood in neat rows. Trellises climbed with beans. A small shed sat near the back, painted pale gray, with hand tools hanging beneath its overhang. Someone had run a hose line through the old woven-wire fence.

And behind the tomatoes, half-hidden by leaves, stood a weathered hedge post Samuel had driven into the ground more than thirty years earlier.

Karen Hill stepped between him and the nearest bed.

“I mean it, Samuel. This is an association-maintained area.”
