When Richard Kicked Her Clover Seed, Kathleen Refused to Surrender the Farm Her Mother Saved

Chapter 1: The Seed Sack at the Edge of the Corn

Richard’s boot struck the red clover sack before Kathleen could answer.

The burlap folded under his heel, then rolled off the field road and burst at one corner. A thin stream of seed spilled into the dust between the corn rows.

No one moved.

Kathleen still held the wicker basket against her hip. The ears of corn inside it pressed against her forearm, their green husks damp from the morning. Across from her, Richard lowered his foot as though he had only nudged aside a stone.

Behind him stood Eric Martin and two neighboring farmers who had come for the cooperative’s informal field walk. They had been discussing harvest dates and shared equipment ten minutes earlier. Now each man seemed to find something urgent to study in the dirt.

Richard pointed at the torn sack.

“That,” he said, “is what’s left of the operating reserve.”

Kathleen set the basket down carefully.
