They Watched the Old Farmer Dig in the Mud Until He Showed Them What the Land Was Hiding

Chapter 1: The Man Standing Where the Excavator Could Not Dig

The excavator bucket stopped six inches above Raymond Miller’s back.

Mud sucked at his boots as he twisted around, one hand still wrapped around the long ash handle of his shovel. Above him, the steel teeth hung black with wet soil. A thin stream of brown water slipped from one tooth and struck the shoulder of his overalls.

Nicholas Harris leaned from the cab and killed the hydraulics.

Behind the machine, two hired hands stood beside Jack with their arms folded. One of them smiled as if Raymond had stepped into the field for their entertainment.

Jack did not smile.

“Get out of there,” he called.

Raymond turned back to the rectangular slab half buried in the lower field. It was wider than a stock trough and nearly invisible beneath the water except for one pale corner. He pushed the shovel blade into the mud along its edge.

“Dad.”
