They Took His Family Nativity From the Farm Gate—Then the Old Road Records Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Nativity Was Gone Before Sunrise

Dennis Harris saw the cedar stable disappear into the back of the pickup before he understood why anybody was touching it.

He had come down the lane in his barn coat with one glove tucked under his arm, expecting to check the water trough before feeding. Instead, an association pickup sat half on the gravel near his gate. Its hazard lights flashed against the gray dawn. A man Dennis knew only as the snowplow contractor was holding the little wooden stable against his chest while Margaret Roberts stood beside the open tailgate.

“Put that down,” Dennis said.

The contractor stopped.

Margaret turned. “Morning, Dennis.”

He walked closer. The three cedar figures were already in a cardboard box. Joseph had been wrapped in an old feed sack. The small carved cradle was lying on its side.

Dennis looked at Margaret rather than the contractor.

“That belongs to me.”
