The Farm Board Charged Every Neighbor for His Private Pond—Until He Found the Missing Insurance Money

Chapter 1: The Pond Became Everyone’s Liability Overnight

Nancy Anderson stepped into the gravel lane before Joshua Clark could ease the tractor past the pond gate.

He touched the brake. Behind him, the hay wagon settled with a wooden groan, stacked high enough that he could barely see its rear corners in the mirrors.

Nancy did not move.

She stood beside the weathered gate with a white envelope in one hand and the cooperative’s red ledger tucked against her hip.

“You’re overdue,” she said.

Joshua killed the tractor engine.

“For what?”

Nancy held out the envelope.
