For Nine Sundays They Dumped Their Fairground Trash Beside His Farm Gate—Then He Started Keeping Records

Chapter 1: The Ninth Sunday at the Cattle Gate

The first black bag was leaning against the lower rail of Charles King’s cattle gate.

The second had split.

Greasy paper trays, crushed drink cups, plastic forks, and a ribbon of yellow ticket stubs lay across the gravel where his feed truck needed to turn in less than an hour.

Charles stopped his pickup twenty feet short of the entrance and kept both hands on the wheel.

Nine Sundays.

He did not need a calendar to count them anymore.

The first weekend, he had assumed somebody’s bag had fallen from a truck. He had tossed it into his own utility trailer and taken it to the transfer station.

The second time there were three bags.
