Everyone Thought David Was Wasting the Harvest Until the Farm’s Real Debt Came Due

Chapter 1: The Pumpkin David Would Not Put in a Box

David carried the best-looking pumpkin past the packing tables and headed straight toward the goats.

It was round, deep orange, and nearly unmarked. One of the visiting families stopped beside the fence to watch him. A child pointed at the pumpkin, then at the cardboard produce boxes stacked beneath the shed roof.

“That one looks perfect,” the child said.

David kept walking.

Mud pressed around his boots as he crossed the farmyard. Behind him, seasonal workers sorted cabbage, apples, squash, and late greens beneath hanging work lights. The sale crates went on blue pallets. Damaged produce went into gray tubs. Twenty-eight sealed cardboard boxes sat apart beneath the shadow of the old barn.

The goats heard him coming and crowded the trough.

David rested the pumpkin on its edge. He could feel the softness through his glove before he even raised the knife.

“Dad.”
