She Let Him Blame Her for the Dying Farm Until the Sunflowers Proved What He Refused to See

Chapter 1: The Report Richard Threw Across the Sunflower Fence

Richard Allen held the graph so close to Katherine’s face that the corner of the paper trembled against the brim of her hat.

“Explain that.”

The black line plunged across the page from left to right. Behind it, forty acres of late-August sunflowers stood in orderly rows, their heavy heads turned east as though refusing to witness what was happening at the entrance fence.

Katherine kept one hand around her brown field notebook. The other rested against the top rail.

“I already did,” she said.

“Then do it so a farmer can understand.”

Two seasonal workers had stopped beside the utility cart. Samuel Baker stood near his truck on the county road, a wrench still in his hand. Richard had chosen the one place where no answer could remain private.

He slapped the report with two fingers. “Projected yield is down eighteen percent. Revenue is worse. You changed the irrigation sequence, cut fertilizer on the west side, and told me to wait.”
