She Thought the Farm Road Dispute Was About Money Until the Old Survey File Told a Different Story

Chapter 1: The Stakes Appeared Before Breakfast

The first orange stake stood directly in the path of Kathleen Roberts’s tractor.

She saw it while walking toward the equipment shed with a coffee mug in one hand and a ring of keys in the other. A second stake leaned beside the drainage ditch. A third had been driven into the grass near the cattle gate, turning a lane that had carried combines, hay wagons, feed trucks, and pickup trailers for decades into something barely wider than an ordinary truck.

Kathleen stopped.

The tractor sat behind her beneath the shed roof, hooked to a flat wagon loaded with empty produce bins. She needed that wagon in the lower field before eight.

Mark Wilson’s pickup was parked beyond the gate.

He was standing beside the lane with a folder under one arm.

“Morning,” he said.

Kathleen looked from him to the stakes.
