The Silver Bracelet At The Service Station And The Lost Granddaughter

CHAPTER 6: THE RETENTION DAM

The wind atop the fifty-foot earthen dam was freezing and violent, whipping the spray of the toxic retention basin across the narrow four-foot-wide metal catwalk. The green-tinged acid water churned with caustic froth below the rusty steel safety railings.

On the helicopter pad at the far end of the catwalk, Garrett Blackwood stood with his back to the spinning tail rotor of the Bell 429. His expensive coat was torn, his face smeared with caliche dust, his eyes manic and feral. In his left arm, he clutched five-year-old Paisley, who was sobbing hysterically, kicking her small canvas sneakers in a desperate effort to break free.

In his right hand, Blackwood held the electronic detonator, his thumb poised over the red master firing toggle.

Jackson Reed stepped onto the metal catwalk thirty feet away. He had slung his shotgun over his back. He held no weapon in his hands. He walked with slow, measured, deliberate strides across the vibrating steel mesh, his glacier-blue eyes locked onto the billionaire’s trembling face.

“Put the child down, Garrett,” Jackson said, his deep baritone cutting through the shriek of the helicopter turbines with terrifying, cold composure. “You’re out of moves. The FAA has grounded your flight plan. Tribal police have blocked the access highway. Federal marshals have your accounts frozen.”

“I don’t need accounts, Jackson!” Blackwood screamed hysterically, spittle flying from his lips. “I have sixty million in bearer bonds aboard this aircraft! All I have to do is push this button, the dam collapses, and every shred of evidence dissolves into the river! You took thirty years of peace from me, Jackson! You should have stayed dead in Colombia!”

“You’re the one who died thirty years ago, Garrett,” Jackson replied, taking another measured step forward, closing the distance to twenty feet. “You sold your soul to steal another man’s land. And now you’re hiding behind a five-year-old baby.”

Blackwood’s face twisted in psychopathic fury. “I’ll drop her, Jackson! I swear to God I’ll drop her over the rail into the acid!”

Blackwood leaned backward over the railing, swinging Paisley out over the forty-foot drop into the boiling, toxic sludge below!

Paisley screamed in terror, her small hand reaching out toward Jackson: “Grandpa! Catch me!”

In that split-second of distraction, when Blackwood’s weight shifted onto his rear heel, Jackson Reed moved with the blinding, lethal speed of an Army Ranger sniper.

Jackson didn’t lunge for Blackwood’s body; he threw himself forward in a low, explosive slide across the wet steel catwalk. His right hand whipped out like an iron vice, clamping around Blackwood’s ankle and wrenching the billionaire’s leg upward with bone-shattering force!

Blackwood lost his footing on the slick metal mesh, his body pitching backward over the railing with a wild shriek of terror!

As Blackwood fell, his grip on Paisley slipped.

The five-year-old girl began to plummet toward the churning toxic pit below!

“I’ve got you, little bird!” Jackson roared.

Jackson threw his upper body over the edge of the steel railing, his combat-hardened arm lunging down through the void. His calloused fingers clamped with iron strength around Paisley’s wrist—his fingers locking securely around the hand-forged silver eagle feather bracelet!

With a mighty, earth-shaking heave that strained every tendon in his back and shoulder, Jackson swung Paisley up into the air, catching her small body against his broad chest, rolling backward onto the solid safety of the concrete dam crest!

Behind them, Garrett Blackwood’s body hit the water with a heavy splash, his screams swallowed by the caustic sludge. In his final panic, his thumb spasmed against the detonator switch.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion tore through the base of the concrete spillway twenty feet away, sending a towering fountain of mud, rock, and fractured rebar into the night sky!

The earthen dam began to groan—a terrifying, structural screech as a twelve-foot fracture webbed across the face of the berm, threatening to unleash five million gallons of toxic acid down the canyon!

“The dam is failing!” Preacher yelled from the access road.

Jackson sprinted down the catwalk carrying Paisley, sliding down the gravel embankment to where his brothers and Lauren were waiting.

“Red! Tank! The auxiliary bulldozers!” Jackson commanded.

Without hesitation, two veteran brothers leaped into the cabs of two seventy-ton Caterpillar D9 earthmovers parked at the rim, their massive diesel engines roaring into life. Moving in synchronized military engineering precision, the heavy dozers pushed two hundred tons of dense granite rip-rap directly into the breach, crushing the fracture and sealing the earthen berm moments before the water could break through!

The dam held!

Lauren rushed forward, collapsing to her knees in the dirt, wrapping her arms around Paisley and Jackson, sobbing with pure, unadulterated joy. “You did it… oh God, Dad, you saved her!”

Paisley hugged Jackson’s neck with all her might, kissing his scarred cheek, her silver bracelet gleaming in the moonlight. “Grandpa saved me. Grandpa never lets go.”

Suddenly, the night sky above the open pit exploded into a dazzling array of flashing red, blue, and white emergency lights.

Three Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by a dozen marked Arizona State Trooper cruisers and Navajo Tribal Police vehicles, swarmed the rim, securing the mine and sealing the greatest environmental recovery in Arizona history.

Preacher and Doc arrived at the dam crest on foot, carrying heavy hydraulic clamping tools. Working side by side with the dozer crews, they secured heavy forged-steel emergency bypass plates across the fractured spillway, completely halting the flow of green leachate into the lower canyon.

Down in the mud, Blackwood sputtered and coughed, dragging his battered, soaked body onto the rocky bank, where two Navajo tribal officers instantly pinned him to the ground with rifles drawn, ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Special Agent Sarah Jenkins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation marched down the access ramp, holding her badge high in the floodlights. “Garrett Blackwood, you are under arrest for federal environmental terrorism, armed kidnapping, attempted capital murder, and thirty years of interstate land fraud.”

Blackwood looked up from the mud, his face bruised and broken, glaring at Jackson Reed with helpless, defeated venom. “You should have stayed dead, Reed…”

Jackson looked down at the disgraced tycoon with cold, immovable pity. “A man who fights for his family never dies, Garrett. He just comes home.”
