They Fined His Farm for Blocking Their Road—Then He Audited Every Rule They Had Ignored

Chapter 1: The Orange Tag on the Hay Wagon

The orange tag was tied to the brake lever of Robert Mitchell’s hay wagon so tightly that he had to cut it loose with his pocketknife.

He stood beside the loaded wagon at the entrance to the shared gravel road, the late-afternoon heat pressing against his shirt, and read the first line twice.

ROAD CLEARANCE VIOLATION.

The wagon carried twenty-four square bales stacked under a faded canvas sheet. Robert had pulled it into the broad turnout beside his gate less than fifteen minutes earlier so the farm-supply truck could come through from the opposite direction. The turnout had been used that way for as long as Robert could remember—feed trucks, cattle trailers, propane deliveries, even the road grader when somebody needed space to pass.

Yet the orange tag carried his name.

A pickup rolled slowly toward him.

Eric Davis stopped beside the gate and lowered his window.

“You got it, then.”
