They Tore Out His Grandfather’s Vines, Never Realizing Their Entire Development Drank From His Land

Chapter 1: The Morning the Oldest Row Came Down

The excavator bucket was hanging over the oldest vine in the vineyard when Jason Carter came around the equipment shed.

For a second he could not make sense of what he was seeing.

The machine sat where there had been a narrow strip of grass the evening before. Its steel tracks had flattened the shoulder beside the county road and ground pale dust into the first vineyard row. Fresh earth lay piled along a rough corridor aimed toward the neighboring development.

Then the bucket lowered.

“Stop!”

Jason ran.

The equipment operator jerked his hands from the controls. The bucket stopped less than a foot above the twisted remains of a vine.

Three others were already gone.
