When the New Neighbor Moved the Fence, Nancy Harris Let the Survey Stakes Answer Him

Chapter 1: The Morning They Pulled Out Her Gate

The excavator bucket was already under Nancy Harris’s gate when she reached the lower pasture.

Steel teeth lifted the weathered wooden frame until the hinges screamed. One cedar post leaned, resisted for half a second, then tore free with a clot of dark soil hanging from its base.

“Stop.”

The operator couldn’t hear her through the engine.

Nancy walked closer and raised one hand.

This time he saw her. The bucket froze with the gate hanging crooked above the ground.

Nancy had opened that gate thousands of times. Her father had set the original posts. Her husband had replaced the hinges twice. One hinge still carried a small weld where he’d repaired it rather than spend money on a new one.

Now the whole thing dangled from a machine belonging to someone who had owned the adjoining property less than a year.
